The moment we entered the estate we were greeted by the simplicity of the courtyard with it’s architectural motif throughout the building. Ryan and I heard great things about Opus One Winery and decided to book a tour to experience it ourselves. Better wine tasting experiences in the area.I spent a weekend in wine country a few weeks ago and visited one of the best wineries in Napa Valley. Interesting to see the HQ of such a well known wine but that's about as far as it goes. It is quite simply an expensive wine bar lacking in any atmosphere or ambience. Staff there were all charming but if you do go there don't think that you're going to be in for any sort of unique experience. It had no warmth or history to speak of and was just rather bland. Unlike a visit to a chateau in Bordeaux or Beaune, the Opus winery was never a residence and is more of a statement of opulence or monied success. The 2011 was good but of course should be exceptional at that price. Personally I don't think that they should have been offering the 2013, it was far too young and to be honest was really nothing special. Once you chose your wine you good take it outside and walk around the open areas of the building. We were then taken to a room where we were offered a choice between the 2011 vintage ($60), 2013 ($40) and some other other wine were the grapes weren't good enough for a particular vintage ($20). On arrival we checked in at reception and quickly discovered that they probably had maybe 20-30 guests and hour. The Opus One Winery is a quite spectacular building from the road, very futuristic in design. Only surprise and disappointment was just how much litter was along the roadside on the Silvorado Trail, just appalling. Unarguably the most well-known European wine families, the Rothschilds, paired up with one of the great New World wine pioneers, Mondavi. It was a good 40 - 50 minute cycle to Opus One Winery but wonderful scenery along the way. We cycled from Yountville via the Silvorado Trail which is actually a road with a dedicated cycle lane. This is our first visit to Napa and we had pre-booked a wine tasting here.
